Head & Whole 2: Talking Heads – 4th September – 13th October 2012

Now in its second year, the Head & Whole project acts as a showcase and network for artists and academics whose practice and research concern human form and related subjects alongside and within the contemporary visual arts.

We can confirm that this year’s Abbey Walk Gallery show will include Wendy Elia’s BP 2010 Portrait Award piece The Visit V, and Prof. Stephen Newton’s Self Portrait by a Painting, along with two little-known sculptures by Jacob Epstien and Barbara Hepworth. We  are also very excited to welcome Alison Lambert’s work into the project, courtesy of Jill George Gallery. This year we will be showing new work by John Devane, who has work in the Imperial War Museum, alongside the most historic piece in our local authority collection – a portrait of military and naval genius George Monck attributed to the School of Peter Lely.

21st September – Portrait Drawing Workshop with Wendy Elia – 6pm – 9pm – £25

A unique event to work with a BP Portrait Award artist. Wendy will begin the workshop with quick drawings to explore and activate eye-hand-brain co-ordination and its relationship to observational drawing, and go on to explore methods of rendering the facial feature and volume . She will be seeing each person individually to discuss their drawing aims & objectives, throughout the session.

Paper and graphite will be available at extra charge – no charcoal, please – Booking Essential

22nd September – Artists Talking Heads  11am – 3pm approx. – £10

A day of artist’s talks and interviews with Wendy Elia, Liam O’Connor, Bartosz Beda and Linda Ingham – Phillip Reeves will also be in attendance to chat to the audience about his work – Booking Essential

5th October – Workshop Presentation with John Devane: Painting – A Transformational Approach – 6pm – 9pm – £12

A practical and theoretical presentation about an approach to painting which might be seen as ‘transformational’ practice from both primary and mediated imagery. John will take participants through the use of photographic material, notions of chance and serendipitous connections etc. when making paintings along with a look at the figure/ground relationship and the idea of thinking of a painting as a sequence of layers rather than something laid out on a surface – Booking Essential

6th October – Talking Heads: Under the Skin . . . Seminar – 10am – 4pm approx. – £15

An illustrious line-up pf speakers including Liz Rideal, Professor Stephen Newton, John Devane, Liam O’Connor, Margaret Ashman and more . . .

Liz Rideal of the Slade School of art and the National Portrait Gallery has her work in collections internationally and is widely published. She will be giving a paper about the nature of cloth within the history of portraiture.

Stephen Newton has exhibited and published internationally; most recently Art & Ritual: A Painter’s Journey has been described by professor Donald Kuspit as “truly major”. Professor Newton’s paper will consider the subject of Picasso’s relationship to African Art – Booking Essential
